Gorillaz Arcade

For the release of Song Machine’s ARIES we were tasked with finding a covid-friendly way to promote the single while allowing fans to interact with the track.The goal was to take the awesome ARIES vibe and distill it into a Final Drive arcade throwback, custom pixel art and crunchy pixels included. And with over a million button smashes to date we think we hit the mark.

Pixel Palooza

The visual style of the Gorillaz is iconic, so we weren’t about to take it lightly. To make sure the game was as fun to look at as it was to play, we created over a hundred custom sprites, animated gifs and pieces of art referencing the ARIES music video and other Gorillaz art and media. We even hid a few Easter eggs in the mix, and fans blew our minds with how quickly they picked up on the references in our inverted retro world.

Results

The ARIES arcade throwback performed amazingly with over 40K fans showing up to play the game. Our conversions were boosted by 21% and we saw a distinct uptick in music consumption with over 108K streams attributed to the game. The resulting social buzz helped bring even more organic engagement around the experience.
